The history of Kemijärvi dates back to around 1580, when Paavali Ollinpoika Halonen first settled in the area, establishing what is now known as the village of Halosenranta. This historical foundation is celebrated through several attractions that offer a window into the town’s past.
Kemijärvi boasts a rich cultural heritage, showcased through various sites and museums. The Kemijärvi Church, an iconic symbol of the town, is a testament to the local architectural style and offers visitors a peaceful place to reflect. Scattered throughout the town center are 14 historical boards that narrate Kemijärvi’s rich history through texts and photographs. The Kemijärvi Local History Museum, located in the town center, tells the story of peasant life in the early 1900s. This museum offers visitors fascinating insights into the daily lives and traditions of the people who lived in the region during that time, with displays of historical artifacts and exhibits that bring the past to life.
Visitors can experience one of the world’s unique attractions at the Lampivaara Amethyst Mine. This gemstone mine welcomes visitors to explore, learn about mineralogy, and even dig for their own amethyst, which has been waiting millions of years to be discovered.
Kemijärvi has gained a reputation for its vibrant art scene, particularly in wood sculpture. The historic Puustell farmstead in Kemijärvi’s Särkikanka is a must-visit for cultural tourists who appreciate art and scenic lakeside views. The Art Centre Puustelli’s exhibition is open during the summer. The exhibition hall is located in an old logging boat shed, situated in the Puustelli yard area. Additionally, the exhibition’s sculptures can be found abundantly around the city, inside commercial premises as well as outdoors, for example, along the Kuumaniemi pond trail.
