Finnish Glass Museum

The Finnish Glass Museum was founded in 1961. Since the 300th anniversary of the Finnish glass industry in 1981, it has operated in the Alatehdas building, completed in 1914, which was purchased by the city of Riihimäki in 1975. The conversion of the building for the museum was designed by Academician Tapio Wirkkala.

The museum has a permanent exhibition and temporary exhibitions as well as a research library and archive, and the museum shop sells glass-related literature, design glass and souvenirs.

The Finnish Glass Museum’s permanent exhibition is on two floors; the lower exhibition hall features the history and techniques of glass-making. The exhibition space on the second floor depicts the history of Finnish glass-making from the 18th century onwards. The display cabinets have packaging and household glass as well as art glass.

The main emphasis in the collection of the Finnish Glass Museum is on art glass and design since the 1920s.
