Lappish War Monument
The Lappish War monument, unveiled in 1994, is situated in the yard of Juustola, a café that also sells cheese and souvenirs.
German troops retreating from Oulu and the Jaeger Brigade, under the command of the Armoured Division and proceeding on bicycles, trying to prevent the Germans’ advance, met at a road junction on 28th September 1944. The shots exchanged were the first in the Lappish War.
The following text is inscribed on the stone: On this spot were exchanged the first shots of the Lappish War on 28th September 1944.
