Villa Kokkonen
Villa Kokkonen by the World-Renowned Architect Alvar Aalto
Nestled in the scenic landscape of Vanhankylänniemi on the shores of Lake Tuusula, Villa Kokkonen is set to open as a new cultural attraction in the summer of 2025. Designed by Alvar Aalto, this modernist artist’s residence was completed in 1969 as a home and workspace for composer Joonas Kokkonen (1921–1996). He lived in the house for the rest of his life, and since 1998, it has been owned by the City of Järvenpää.
As one of Aalto’s rare private homes, Villa Kokkonen features a striking dark exterior that contrasts with its luminous interior, rich in distinctive details. The curved forms seen in the entryway walls and fireplaces echo the awning’s shape, creating a sense of cohesion. Inside, a blend of custom-built elements and classic Artek furniture enhances the home’s artistic atmosphere.
