Pudasjärvi Church
The cruciform church in Pudasjärvi was built in 1781 on the shore of the lake Pudasjärvi in Riekinkangas and it was the third church that had been built in the same place. There’s room for 700 people in the church.
The churches bell tower has three floors and the paintings on the outside walls are the only pleinair paintings Mikael Toppelius made in 1765-1766.
On the churches yard there’s a monument in honour of the soldiers that were killed in action in the war of indepence. Pudasjärvis first reverend Josephus Palmannus and his family are buried in the churches yard. The family of Palmannus was drowned in the lake Pudasjärvi on the way back from the church at Whitsun in 1666.
The graveyard is surrounded by a 1370 m long fence made of timber. In the center of the graveyard there’s a soldier’s grave with a monument made by artist Paavo Tolonen and a cross made of stone designed by E. Andersson.
