Saana & Halti Fells

Saana

A sacred Lapp fell, located on the eastern side of Kilpisjärvi. Saana is 1029 metres tall and its western side was protected in 1988, as the top of the fell is barren and the upper slopes are decorated with a number of rare species of butterfly that thrive in barren landscapes due to calcareous favouring vegetation.

Hikers may freely traverse the marked trails on the northern side of Saana, but access to the Saana Nature Reserve is prohibited from 15 May to 1 September.

Halti

Finland’s tallest fell, reaching a magnificent height of 1328 metres. Halti may be reached by hiking or skiing along the trail starting from Kilpisjärvi. You can also reach Halti by snowmobile with a local guide. In the summertime, you can reach Halti from Kilpisjärvi using the marked Calotte Route.
