Sammonlahti Church

Sammonlahti Church is one of the newer churches in Finland, it was inaugurated on the Feast of the Annunciation, March 22nd, in 1992. The building is a combination of concrete, red brick, and grey granite from the quarries of Ristijärvi.

The altarpiece is a window in the shape of a cross through which lights pours down upon the congregation. The spacious hall is supported by ten pillars representing the ten commandments, with a corridor leading to the altar bordered by another twelve pillars representing the apostles. Directly above the altar there is a blue disk lit with halogen lights.

The altar contains a sculpture by the artist Brita Flander, and is over 6,000kg in weight. Called “Lving Water”, it consists of clear glass and flowing water. There are four stained glass windows by the Estonian artist Rait Prääts, who made ingenious use of glass and various cutting and corroding techniques.
