Syöte National Park
Syöte National Park, located in Northern Finland on the border of North Ostrobothnia and Lapland, offers an enchanting landscape of rugged hills, unique hilltop and slope bogs, and ancient spruce forests that create an ideal setting for hikers. Syöte, the largest of the park’s four zones, provides excellent opportunities for hiking in summer and skiing in winter. The park’s cross-country skiing trails form an important part of the wider network serving the Syöte tourist centres.
The areas within the municipalities of Taivalkoski and Posio are quieter and especially suitable for trekking and nature observation.
Syöte National Park is a chain of old-growth forests, some of which grow at higher altitudes. A quarter of the park consists of diverse mires — mostly North Ostrobothnian aapa bogs, along with rare hanging bogs found on hill slopes up to 300 metres high. Many of the mires reflect the region’s traditional meadow culture, and traces of historical slash-and-burn agriculture, reindeer herding, and forestry can still be found throughout the area.
